Interview: Cover Girl Romanie Smith (UK)

Can you tell us a little about you?

I'm a UK based, Internationally published and featured Covergirl.  I'm 21, born 1st December 1994 (a Saggittarius).  I live in Essex, England and I work freelance, I've been modelling for about 3 years and I love every second of it!

If you could change anything about yourself, what would it be?

I wouldn't change anything about myself.  It's taken me 21 years to accept who I am flaws and all! haha I think we need to celebrate our differences, rather than change ourselves to fit into what society deems acceptable.

How did you start modeling?

I opened a Model Mayhem account, just for fun with about 5 selfies I took on my iPhone.  I didn't think it would actually lead to much. A local photographer contacted me and asked me to test with him, which I did as I had nothing better to do.  I really enjoyed the shoot and the images I had back were petty cool, better than I'd expected considering I'd had no experience.  Although he had more of less provided me with a decent portfolio, he suggested I shoot with some other reputable photographers and expand it and give it some variety.  He gave me some great advice over the next couple of months and within about 4 month, not only had I got a decent and varied portfolio, I was pretty much fully booked.  It's been a bit of whirlwind since I started 3 years ago.  I'm very grateful to him and we're still very close friends.

What do you think of the work as a model?

I love my job!!! It's hard work, early mornings, long days, late nights, lots of travelling usually alone and with heavy luggage.  It's certainly true that it's not always glamorous, but I've made some incredible friends, seen some amazing places, travelled throughout Europe and America and have some wonderful memories and created some awesome art with the help of some amazing teams.

What is your beauty regimen?

If I'm truly honest, I don't really have one, but I drink a lot of water, all day every day! I don't drink much alcohol (not for any other reason other than I just don't really like it), I eat quite healthy foods, although I do have treats and don't actually deprive myself of anything.  I always remove my make up before bed and I moisturise my skin, I think it's great to keep yourself hydrated, both inside and out.

What are your personal qualities which distinguish you from others?

Ermmm... I don't really know, this industry is all about looks, but I'd like to think that a lot of what defines me, is my personality.  I love to laugh as much as possible, but I'm also very professional and I work hard.  I'm very grounded, I'm grateful for the opportunities that have come my way and I don't take anything for granted.  I guess from a photographer's point of view, I have good bone structure and I'm a chameleon, I change my look easily and I guess that keeps things interesting!

What are your plans for the future?

I hate divulging plans! Until something is actually happening I don't like to tell anyone, too many times plans change at the last moment or don't come to fruition.  But I am planning to revisit America in November and I'm hoping to shoot my first small role in a film later this year. Exciting times.

What are some of your favorite experiences so far?

Oh my god!! I have so many, my first trip alone was a major experience for me, I was 18.  I'd never even caught a bus let alone a plane on my own and I was so nervous about working in a country where, not only I didn't know the people, but I didn't speak the language.  But I have been there so many times now, they are like my little French Family.   ♥ However, to date - my favourite has to be being a model representative for GoldRush Rally, travelling across the West Coast of America, Boston to L.A.  It was literally breathtaking.

Do you have any advice for those who want to start modeling?

I would say, get a great portfolio something that showcases your personality and whether you're freelance or agency represented, check out photographer's, look at their work and check references... NEVER do or feel pressured into anything you don't feel uncomfortable with.

What do you think of the magazine?

It's a great magazine!! Thank you so much for asking me to be part of it :) xx
