Interview: Makeup artist: Stéphanie Bernard (France)
Can you tell us a little about you ?
I'm a French makeup artist and I manage a makeup school in Strasbourg since 13 years (www.MetaMake-Up.com). I learn to my students the art of makeup and I love that ! In parallel, I still work with photographers and I have a style rather artistic. After a carrier in the fashion makeup and the theater makeup, I have started the artistic makeup (face painting and body painting) for my daughter because she wanted me to reproduce the characters of cartoons with make-up products. My first character was the "tooth fairy" inspired by the movie "Rise of the Guardians". This makeup was a highlight of my life and career.
How long have you been a makeup artist and how did you get your start?
I’m makeup artiste since 18 years. I have started the facepainting by chance in a zoo, because a friend was looking for someone to make makeup on children. Thanks to that, I realized that I loved make-up and I started to worke on the fashion shows and operas in France and in other countries. I was also trained by Michel MARCHIONE at the “ Opéra du Rhin “ at Strasbourg in France. I learned the make-up and the manufacturing wigs with him. Later, I opened my makeup school and became a redactor for professional magazines. In 2012 I have created a brand of makeup professional: SB Make-Up. You can buy these products on www.Majama.fr
Where do you get your inspiration from?
I’m getting the inspiration all over. I’m very curous and I’m interrested by art, fashion, nature, photography, books, illustrations… I love watching the work of other make-up artists : I really love the work of Nick WOLFE and Jinny HOULE. They are a great inspiration to me. I have tremendous respect for them.
What are some of your makeup products that you use? I’m using my brand J But I’m working too with Superstar, Mehron, Paradise, Diamond FX, Bad Ass Stencils and Temptu. These products are highly pigmented, I need for my work of flash materials and pigmented. These brands are perfect for me.
Who have you worked for and who would you like to work for in the future?
On the fashion shows I have worked for Chanel, Dior, Jean Paul Gaultier, Sonia Rykiel. In the future I would like to work in my school J I want to evolve but I do not see myself doing anything else.
Any makeup tips you'd like to share with us?
I think it’s better for the skin to use good products. Whether for artistic make-up or for the make-up every day, it’s important to take care of the skin.
If you were not a makeup artist, what would be your dream job? My dream is to have a syrup bar ! I imagine a design place and very colorful with neon lights and with with a whole wall decorated with bottles of syrup ! I love syrup, it’s my favorite drink.
What are three things every girl needs in her makeup bag?
I think just a mascara and a lipstick. I say that but I have a lot of makeup in my bag : 2 foundations, 1 palette of powder, 2 eyeshadows, 1 eye liner, 1 mascara, 5 lipsticks, 2 gloss, 5 lip pencils, 2 eye pencils , 1 eyebrows pencils, and of course brushes ! My bag is too weight.
What are common mistakes you see women make on their makeup?
Women wear makeup too much. They have 1 cm of foundation on the face and they stick when someone make them a kiss. I think it’s a pitty. For me, a beautiful complexion have to be light, nude, light but corrected.
What do you think of the magazine ?
As I said, i’m very curious and I love to see beautiful pictures. In this magazine, we can see pictures in full-pages, differents styles, and artists and models of differents countries. It’s really great ! Thank you for that !

Pouvez-vous nous parler un peu de vous?
Je suis artiste maquilleur français et je dirige une école de maquillage à Strasbourg depuis 13 ans (www.MetaMake-Up.com). J'apprends à mes étudiants l'art du maquillage et j'adore ça ! En parallèle, je travaille toujours avec des photographes et j'ai un style plutôt artistique. Après une carrière dans le maquillage de mode et le maquillage de théâtre, j'ai commencé le maquillage artistique (peinture de visage et body painting) pour ma fille parce qu'elle voulait que je reproduise les personnages de dessins animés avec des produits de maquillage. Mon premier personnage a été la « fée des dents » inspirée par le film « Rise of the Guardians ». Ce maquillage a été un moment fort de ma vie et de ma carrière.
Depuis combien de temps êtes-vous artiste maquilleur et comment avez-vous commencé ?
Je suis maquilleuse depuis 18 ans. J'ai commencé la peinture faciale par hasard dans un zoo, parce qu'un ami cherchait quelqu'un pour faire du maquillage sur les enfants. Grâce à cela, j'ai réalisé que j'aimais le maquillage et j'ai commencé à travailler sur les défilés de mode et dans les opéras en France et dans d'autres pays. J'ai également été formé par Michel MARCHIONE à l'Opéra du Rhin à Strasbourg en France. J'ai appris le maquillage et la fabrication des perruques avec lui. Plus tard, j'ai ouvert mon école de maquillage et je suis devenue rédactrice pour des magazines professionnels. En 2012, j'ai créé une marque de maquillage professionnel : SB Make-Up. D'où vous inspirez-vous?
Je reçois l'inspiration partout. Je suis très curieuse et je suis intéressée par l'art, la mode, la nature, la photographie, les livres, les illustrations... J'aime regarder le travail d'autres maquilleurs : J'aime vraiment le travail de Nick WOLFE et Jinny HOULE. Ils sont une grande inspiration pour moi. J'ai un immense respect pour eux.
Quels les produits de maquillage que vous utilisez?
J'utilise ma marque :-) Mais je travaille aussi avec Superstar, Mehron, Paradise, Diamond FX, Bad Ass Stencils et Temptu. Ces produits sont très pigmentés, j'ai besoin pour mon travail de matériaux flash et pigmentés. Ces marques sont parfaites pour moi.
Pour qui avez-vous travaillé et avec qui aimeriez-vous travailler à l'avenir ? Sur les défilés de mode j'ai travaillé pour Chanel, Dior, Jean Paul Gaultier, Sonia Rykiel... À l'avenir, je voudrais travailler dans mon école J Je veux évoluer, mais je ne me vois pas faire autre chose.
Des conseils de maquillage que vous aimeriez partager avec nous?
Je pense que c'est mieux pour la peau d'utiliser de bons produits. Que ce soit pour le maquillage artistique ou pour le maquillage tous les jours, il est important de prendre soin de la peau.
Si vous n'étiez pas un maquilleur, quel serait votre travail de rêve?
Mon rêve est d'avoir un bar à sirop ! J'imagine un endroit design et très coloré avec des néons comme lumières et avec un mur entier décoré avec des bouteilles de sirop ! J'aime le sirop, c'est ma boisson préférée.
Quelles sont les trois choses que chaque fille a besoin dans son sac de maquillage?
Je pense juste un mascara et un rouge à lèvres. Je dis cela, mais j'ai beaucoup de maquillage dans mon sac: 2 fonds de teint, 1 palette de poudre, 2 fards à paupières, 1 eye-liner, 1 mascara, 5 rouges à lèvres, 2 gloss, 5 crayons à lèvres, 2 crayons pour les yeux, 1 crayon à sourcils, Et bien sûr des pinceaux ! Mon sac est trop lourd.
Quelles sont les erreurs courantes que vous voyez les femmes faire sur leur maquillage?
Les femmes portent trop de maquillage. Elles ont 1 cm de fond de teint sur le visage et elles collent quand quelqu'un leur fait la bise. Je pense que c'est dommage. Pour moi, un beau teint doit être léger, naturel mais corrigé.
Que pensez-vous du magazine?
Comme je l'ai dit, je suis très curieuse et j'aime voir de belles images. Dans ce magazine, nous pouvons voir des images en pages entières, des styles différents, des artistes et des modèles de pays différents. C'est vraiment super ! Merci pour ça !
