Interview: Model Amalie Bredahl (Denmark)

Can you tell us a little about you?
If I could have a super-power it would be superhuman - speed since I am always on the run! My name is Amalie Bredahl. I am 22 years old.
Currently I am studying at a new filmschool called MSP, Multiplatform Storytelling and Production in Aarhus, Denmark. This is a great place for creative minds to evolve since the students are introduced to a wide range of topics such as VR, Video-mapping as well as more traditional filmmaking. I have explored 31 countries during my childhood and youth. For instance I lived in Australia for a year at the age of 15. When travelling I rarely spend time at the pool but prefer to explore the country and it’s culture. This has given me a great understanding and respect for other cultures as well as a network of people from all over the world. Due to my curiosity I am always in the middle of new projects. This week I am in the making of a music video along with the editing of some ‘basics of modelling’ tutorials. I believe that it is important to step out of your comfort zone to grow. By challenging myself as often as possible I make sure to always learn something new.
My motto is to try and if you do not succeed try harder. I do not fear failure but believe that you learn from all experiences.

If you could change anything about yourself, what would it be?
I would not change a thing about myself. The moment you stop worrying about what other people might think of your body or personality - holy moly your life becomes easy and delicious as a piece of cake ;)
The need to change ourselves into something ‘better’ is a very important issue today - especially among young women. It seems that we are encouraged to change our bodies and look according to what is ‘trendy’. I hope that women will learn to ignore the latest ‘trends’ and be true to whom they are. Remember that we are not clothe but bodies and you are not supposed to change your body at the same rate as you change your shoes. I believe we should embrace the character we where born to be.

How did you start modeling?
Before I started modeling I was often told that I looked like a model, but I honestly did not like to be in front of cameras. Though I am a person who likes to challenge myself, so I decided to explore modeling by attending photoshoots. I cant say that I was born to be a model. I had not idea how to move my body or use facial expressions. I probably looked like a deer in headlights more than a model the first time I was placed in front of a camera. Eventually I achieved an understanding of light, compositing and a fair amount of tips for posing such as how to place hands or elongate my
neck. Soon I became quite good at posing and comfortable in front of the camera. At some stage I got curious about the work of the photographer. At photoshoots I would ask the photographer a lot of questions about both light and cameras. I recently began to do photography myself, which I believe
have made me an even better model. Having a great understanding of the work of a photographer makes it easier to understand what is needed from you as a model.

What do you think of the work as a model?
I think it is an amazing way to get to know creative people who loves to do what they do. To work with talented people, both photographers, MUA’s, stylists etc. is extraordinary. Being a model is like being a part of an artwork.

What is your beauty regimen?
To stay healthy is the best advise that I can give. I exercise 8 - 9 hours a week (level of intensity varies since I also spend a lot of time stretching out). I do a lot of outdoor running since I like looking at my surroundings and get some fresh air while running. 4 hours a week I do thai-boxing.
Thai boxing is great because it does not only keep you fit, it also makes you understand your body in a completely different way. I too like the thought that thai boxing helps me to be able to defend myself. Of course you should eat healthy and plenty when exercising this much. I eat more than 3 times a day.

What are your personal qualities which distinguish you from others?
According to my look I am quite unique because of my natural blond afro-hair. I have blue eyes, blond hair and very fair skin making me look scandinavian, though some of my features and my hair makes me look more afro-american. I like to laugh in photos. Laughing requires that you act, since you need to make it convincing and natural. Even though laughing is hard to do on command I happen to find it easy. I always have fun and experiment during a shoot so that I am sure that the photographer is challenged as well. At the same time I make sure that there is a lot of different material that he / she can choose from at the end of the shoot.
Another thing that makes me unique is my ability to behave on film. I startet making film before being used as a model for videoshoots. When making model-film I soon found out that a lot of models have no or very little idea about how to move when it is for film. You have to pose differently and do more acting than actual modelling, because every single moment of you is captured by the camera. Models tend to look stiff or ‘unnatural’ in film. Because I understand the mind of a cinematographer, I am able to advise models to move in the correct way. This knowlege I use when modeling for video-shoot myself.

What are your plans for the future?
Life has taught me not to rush into making a decision or think to far ahead. I am not supposed to know what I want to do in the future. The world changes so quickly that my options might as well change in a few days. Therefore I focus on what I find interesting and would like to learn today. I do not believe in the safe choice, so I can just as well explore all corners of my life that I find interesting and see where it will bring me.

What are some of your favorite experiences so far?
The greatest experience so far is not one specifik shoot. It is what I have achieved from a combination of all shoots that I have participated in, since I have learned something new every single time.

Do you have any advice for those who want to start modeling?
Definitely. I am in the making of some model tutorials that can be seen on my website www.whiterastaproduction.com I explain everything form how to feel confident in front of the camera (because that is the very first thing you should learn if wanting to become model) as well as posing techniques based on my own experience as a model along with my knowlege of being a photographer.

What do you think of the magazine?
I believe it is a great way to understand photographers and models from different places in the world since we are able to share our experiences and advices. We all work very differently and have unique styles, so it is always interesting to learn more by seeing the work of others. I am always interested in meeting new people - feel free to contact me :D
