Interview: Model Jacqueline Åstrand (Sweden)

Can you tell us a little about you?
I am a smiling and happy person even though I seldom smile in my pictures. I may look fierce but incide I am made of cookie dough and ice cream. With my sailors mouth and my out of control humour Im trying to live life to the fullest, surround myself with people I love, get through med school and stand in front of the camera as much as I can.

If you could change anything about yourself, what would it be?
If you would ask me this question a few years ago - the answer would be everything. I was insecure and believed I was worth nothing - less than nothing. There is nothing unique about this answer at all. And you know why? Because everyone feels like that, not just me. We all feel wothless and that nobody loves us but trust me - this feeling will pass. Even though it seems very real, it is just a feeling which will return from time to time. But you are loved - we all are. So to answer the question there are times that I would like to change everything, but I love myself and wouldn't change a thing.

How did you start modeling?
I've always loved to be creative and I see moments in front of me that I want to create and immortalize. About 2 years ago I had an idea that I wanted to go through with so I contacted a photoghapher who wanted to cooperate with me. Ideas kept coming and I discovered a whole new world of art and amazing people, which I hope I will never leave.

What do you think of the work as a model?
I love it, though it is a lot of hard work. It's not just to stand in front of a camera. You have to know and understand how your face and body works, be creative and give every picture a unique feeling and expression. I've stood barefoot on hot rocks in boiling sun in 40°C, been out in the snow in underwear and pushed my body to positions I didn't know existed. But I love it, and I will always keep pushing myself.

What is your beauty regimen?
Did you know that on sun exposed skin, up to 90% of skin aging is due to the suns UV radiation? The natural aging process is dependent on time and genetics and is unfortunately unchangeable. But about 90% of your skins aging can hypothetically be avoided. I use sunscreen every day of the year, though I am very picky with my choice of sunscreen and have checked every ingredient to make sure that Im not damaging my skin nor my body. Nothing from the pharmacy would ever due.

What are your personal qualities which distinguish you from others?
I'm not afraid to speak my mind, and believe that you should be able to joke and laugh about everything. To me, it's extremely important that nothing is ever taboo.
I also have a supernatural power which gives me a certain feeling of what snack fits the very moment. For example, answering this question and eating a saffron bun goes perfect together.

What are your plans for the future?
I will finish med school, travel the world and live my life with the people I love. Concerning modeling, my plan is to keep modeling until it's no longer possible and then move to the other side of the camera. As a photographer I will be able to keep fullfilling my ideas and do what I love.

What are some of your favorite experiences so far?
That is a very hard question... Every day is a new experience. If we speak photo wise I would say that every new cooperation is amazing, and I am very grateful for all the wonderful people I've had the opportunity to meet and get to know.

Do you have any advice for those who want to start modeling?
Contact photographers and start building a portfolio. Practise in front of the mirror and take selfies to get to know your face and angles. Look in magazines and get inspired. What you also need to do is to don't give up, and never forget what is important to you. People will criticise you and you will feel inadequate but you will prove them wrong and show them what you got. Your look is unique and out there, there is a photoghapher who believe that you are the perfect face for his/her vision. You just need to find him/her.
Though most important is - don't do anything you don't want to do! Ever!

What do you think of the magazine?
I believe it's wonderful to read about the people I know and people I would love to work with and get to know. It's a great way to find and discover new collaborations.
