Interview: Photographer Andrea Aps (Italy)

Tell us something about yourself

I am a architect with a passion for portraiture. I love to capture feelings and moods on somebody’s face, the single moment, what we call hic et nunc !

How and when did you get into photography?

I started to love photography 3 years ago after discovering Jack Olson, an American photographer. His portraits opened the door to this world and gave me the key to reinterpret with a new language my passion

What does photography mean to you?

Photography is the way to express with a “cold” technical mean the never-ending variety of human beings’ feelings

Please briefly describe your photography style for our readers.

portraiture is basically an experience of life: an attitude, a look through which I would like to capture the essence of all forms of life

Where do you get inspiration from?

experiences of life are the prime inspiration. a homeless in the streets of a big city, the rising sun on the see, pensive eyes “stolen” by accident……the multiple aspects of this way of taking photos fascinated me in the art of masters like Annie Leibovitz, Eugenio Recuenco, Katerina Plotnikova ,Monia Merlo, Anka Zhuravleva , Marta Bevacqua and Alessio Albi

Think you in advance what you want in the picture?

I have an image already set on my mind. starting from that, I look for the subject and the background corresponding to that image and I immediately think of the post production activities in order to express the mood of the image

Studio, on location or both?

both

Would you consider yourself a hobbyist or a paid professional?

I am an hobbyist but soon I want to develop the knowhow to become a professional

What has been your most memorable session and why?

the most unforgettable session was around 3 years ago, in the open air, a natural location with kids playing in the water of a lake. when you work with children, the shooting is always fun and spontaneous

Nikon or Canon? Favorite lens?

Canon, 5D Mark III , my favourite and most used lens is EF 85mm f/1.2, EF 50mm f/1.2 and  Sigma 35 mm 1.4 DG

What has been the biggest source of inspiration in your work?

my father was the starting point. he made me discover photography but I was too busy with my work as an architect and could not devote enough time to it. after he died, I went back to my camera and started to reconsider his passion: he was mostly into landscape and this was his heritage, light, colors, the multiple shades and twighlight of sunsets. going further, I tried to apply the same palette to portraiture and realized that they can join perfectly

What is one piece of advice you would like to offer a new photographer looking to start their own business?

to be patient and never give up when you do not reach the results that you have been expecting. photography is a real art and it needs time, preparation and determination to be understood  and put in practice

What do you think of our new magazine?

it is very appealing, a real volcano of different images and styles and a challenging confrontation with other photographers
