Tell us something about yourself
Hello, my name is Denis Mutlu and i am 30 years old portrait photographer. Originally I am from Bulgaria, but  recently moved to live in Amsterdam, Netherlands.

How and when did you get into photography?
I got into photography 6 years ago when i bought my first DSLR. It’s a funny story actually. I didn’t had enough money for vario lens so I bought the cheapest 50mm prime I could found in the store and so unwhilingly I started to shoot portraits and I loved it and never looked back.

What does photography mean to you?
Photography gives me the opportunity to photograph the people the way i see them in my mind.

 

Please briefly describe your photography style for our readers.
Style? What is that? As u can see from my work i still havent developed my own recognizable style but i am getting there shot after shot.

 

Where do you get inspiration from?
I do follow the work of some great photographers like: Benjamin Von Wong, Annie Leibovitz, Joe McNally and many others. Actually i spend like 1 or 2 hours every single day browsing trough the websites like 500px, 1x, DIYPhotography and all kind of photography websites. I like to keep in touch with everything new around the photography business and also that is huge source of inspiration for me.

Think you in advance what you want in the picture?
Preparation is half of the work done. Usually i spend few days every month scouting new locations for future photoshoots and at the end I end up shooting somewhere completely different. Most of the times I create my own diy light sources and the results are amazingly good.

 

Studio, on location or both?
I prefer locations because they give me more versatility but i often shoot in studio too.

 

Would you consider yourself a hobbyist or a paid professional?
I would say i managed to turn my hobby to my profession.

 

What has been your most memorable session and why?
The next one because I am constantly thinking what I am gonna shoot next and never what I have done before :)

 

Nikon or Canon? Favorite lens?
It doesnt matter actually as long as i shoot RAW. But i do have a favorite lens and that is 85mm f/1.4G. It is just the perfect lens and it’s a “must have” for me.

 

What is one piece of advice you would like to offer a new photographer looking to start their own business?
A lot of practice leads to great pictures. Never stop trying untill you get where you wanna be.
