Interview: Photographer Hannes Caspar (Germany)

Tell us something about yourself
I live and work in Berlin and do mainly portraits of people. Beside photography I do electronic music.

How and when did you get into photography?

It actually happened accidentally 10 years ago. I worked as a webdesigner and was totally bored of sitting in front of the computer every day. So I escaped with a simple camera outbound. First I took very graphical and abstract shots of things I found on the streets. But after a while I was bored again and started to take pictures of friends and other contacts. And from then on one thing happened after the other.

What does photography mean to you?
At first it’s a good possibility to express myself. But it’s also nice to get in contact with many interesting people.

Please briefly describe your photography style for our readers.
It’s simple and reduced to the essential. All the small details tell the story.

Where do you get inspiration from?
Mostly from life. Sometimes from some blogs, instagram and facebook. And of course music is very important for me.

Think you in advance what you want in the picture?
No. I never ever plan something before. I do everything very intuitive. I want to get know the people I take photos of. Then I highlight some attributes I like the most.

Studio, on location or both?
Both.

Would you consider yourself a hobbyist or a paid professional?
I earn my money with photography. So I’m doing this professional.

What has been your most memorable session and why?
I can’t say this. I did so many shooting and almost all oft them are special.

What has been the biggest source of inspiration in your work?
Music. Rhythm. Dance.

Nikon or Canon? Favorite lens?

Canon. 50mm, 1.2f. But I’m using a lot of analogue cameras.

What is one piece of advice you would like to offer a new photographer looking to start their own business?
Do it with passion and be hardworking. But don’t take yourself important. And don’t take everything too serious. Have fun!

What do you think of our new magazine?

Well I must admit I don’t know yet… But I definitely will check this out! :)
