Interview: Photographer Jakub Nurczyk (Poland)

Tell us something about yourself

My name is Jakub but I use to be presented as “Jakubeye” – which is my nickname and actually name of my company. I am 23 years old and come from Ostrołęka. It’s a small town close to Warsaw where I am living since almost 1,5 years and try to do all my best to thrive my photography’s skills - a passion of my life.

How and when did you get into photography?

Well, the photography “circled” around me since I was a kid and I was always interested in.  However, that times I didn’t have enough money to buy professional camera so I used  to taking photos by  compact camera. My life changed when I had got my first reflex device - thanks to my beloved mom who had spent her savings for that.Since then I learnt more how to do professional shoots and earned first money what gave me opportunity to buy much more professionals cameras and lens.

What does photography mean to you?

Maybe it could sound a little bit “superficially” but it’s totally true that photograpy is the most important thing in my life. Everyday I am trying to sacrifice all my time (except sleep J)  for that. It’s a big piece of my live and it’s is together with me in all positive as well as negative moments. The photos I am taking are a part of me and of these moments which are sometimes sad and dissapointing, other day happy and succesfull but always memorable. In other words, my photos express myself and my current mood. It doesn’t matter if it’s a street photography or the portrait one because I love the both of them. The most important for me is to make that people who see my pictures feel the same I feel at the moment of doing shoots.

Please briefly describe your photography style for our readers..

Natural beauty and “real” stories of real people! This is important. The photoshop is only for corrections of some details but never on the first place.

Where do you get inspiration from?

I get inspirtation from my life and life of people who surround me. Sometimes it also depends on my mood or time of year or even some details which seems to be unimportant but mean a lot for me.  When I read or review some magazines and billboards and analyze the pictures they include I am wondering how I could change these photos to make them more close to my style.

Think you in advance what you want in the picture?

Well it’ hard to say ... because when I do some “beauty” shoots I am trying to “vizualize” it and predict the final result. On the other hand, I am spontaneous when I am trying to catch the right moments for “real stories” shoots. Then I try to show their truth and depth cause I think it makes them exceptional.

Studio, on location or both?

It doesn’t matter where I do shoots. More important is a daytime because I prefer a daylight - I think that thanks to it photos are more realistic.

Would you consider yourself a hobbyist or a paid professional?

Since 1,5 year I try to join both of them. However, I am also trying not to lose this “thing” which makes that my photos are exceptional for me. This special “thing” is coming from my passion to photograpy and sometimes is missing when you treat this profession only as a source of livelihood. I am affraid that wihout this factor the photo stops to be important not only for me as an author but also for people who paying for it. It’s bad cause in my opinion every photo should present a concete moment (piece) of someone’s life and it’s good when we could go back to this time even after a few years.

What has been your most memorable session and why?

Oh yeah, I exactly remember this session! It’s a currently my source of motivation and I am pretty sure it will not change in the future. It was a year ago. That time I had opportunity to do a few portraits for a some moddel. It was hard time in her life and we spent a lot of hours discussing on it. We are still in touch and would say she is one of my close friends. I am impressed how progress she did since that session and how she solved all problems. I support her everyday and hope that she achieve all she wants to. Her name is Aleksandra Żurawand she is one of the finalists of Polish edition of Top Model TV show J

What has been the biggest source of inspiration in your work?

I would say that it’s everything what surround me but it’s too simple J Generally, I read a lot of magazines and press so it’s a kind of source but on the other hand my photos are the reflection of my feelings and life so it’s an inspiration too.

Nikon or Canon? Favorite lens?

CANON! 35mm 1.4 85mm 1.4 Definitely!

What is one piece of advice you would like to offer a new photographer looking to start their own business?

Don’t give up even if the things are not going well. Focus on your shots and try to improve your skills everyday. Remember that photos should present you and tell others about your style.

What do you think of our new magazine?

You do a great job! Hope that it will be continued in the future and we have another possiblity to cooperate with J
