Interview: Photographer Karolina Ciosek (Poland)
Tell us something about yourself
I was born in Poznan, a beautiful city in western Poland. I’ve been living here all my life.
I studied geography and I’ve been working as a teacher since I graduated from the local university. As an Aquarius I am very curious about the world so I travel a lot. I also like eating good food. Is that a crime?
How and when did you get into photography?
My adventure with professional photography began seven years ago. I started with simple frames, taking portraits of my friends who are models. Then I felt the need to learn, to find out how the equipment works and to develop my skills. I love portraits, fashion and beauty. This is the direction I want to follow.
What does photography mean to you?
Photography is my way of life now. This is something I feel and I breathe with. I’m constantly planning, looking for inspiration, working. It’s such a great state!
Please briefly describe your photography style for our readers.
It may sounds strange but I can’t choose only one style. I’m still looking for new experiences. Each photo shoot is different from the previous one. There is different styling, a different model and a place. There are also different emotions. In my portfolio there are mainly portraits and there is also fashion. Sometimes it is dynamic, with strong colours. Another time it is subtle and innocent. I really enjoy taking black and white photo. They seem mystical to me.
Where do you get inspiration from?
I get inspiration from music, fascinating places, interesting faces. These things make me work.
Do you think in advance what you want in the picture?
Not always. During the photo session it usually turns out which photos show the best emotions and have something to show.
Studio, on location or both?
I love working outside because there is always something going on. However, when the weather is bad or when there’s a special need, I take photos in my studio. Both ways are good for me.
Would you consider yourself a hobbyist or a paid professional?
I am professional and I try to be professional. I’ve already got some experience. A lot of my photos have been published in magazines so photography is not just a hobby. But I try to be myself. Nothing can change who I am inside.
What has been your most memorable session and why?
It was a wedding session with a lovely (as I thought) couple. We went outside the city to take the pictures in the forest. It started raining heavily and the storm came. The bride was wet and really angry. I felt like running away!
What has been the biggest source of inspiration in your work?
It’s the light, the models’ beauty and her look. Eyes can show a lot (the mirrors of our souls).
Nikon or Canon? Favorite lens?
Nikon. My favourite lenses are 35 mm and 50 mm. I use them always and everywhere.
What is one piece of advice you would like to offer a new photographer looking to start their own business?
Try to be confident, read, listen to advice and don’t give up. Each day brings some strengh and new inspiration. Be open to it.
What do you think of our new magazine?
I like the way of editing and the artwork. The magazine is a good way for people to show their talents and admire the work of others. There are so many brilliant photographers and models around the world!
