Tell us something about yourself

Hello everyone! My name is Matt Parfitt, i love french toast, i have a cat called Pops, and my dutch is not improving. HELP!

How and when did you get into photography?

I got into photography relativley late. To make a long story short my father was a photo journalist and was tragically murdered in 2011 and i inherited his cameras (Bronica etrsi & canon AE-1), i had never used an SLR before then and decided to just teach myself how it all worked. And turned out that i fell in love with it.

What does photography mean to you?

Photography for me is my life as well as a legacy to my father. Its the one thing that has held my focus, the one thing i have never gotten bored of (except call of duty! And Pops) Not many people can say they make a living from there passion so its amazing that i can!

 

Please briefly describe your photography style for our readers.

For me thats a difficult question. People say that i do have a particular style but i'm still not sure. The images i enjoy making most are very clean images. I don't like busy images with to much going on.

 

Where do you get inspiration from?

The question is where don't i get inspritration from! From other photographers, socail media, advertising, friends, people walking down the street. I'm a very visual person so if i can see it then it can inspire me.

Think you in advance what you want in the picture?

Yes, most of the time i will have an idea of what i want the end product to be. So i will plan as much as i can before hand. So the lighting, the background or location environment, poses, lenses. But of course when shooting nothing is certain it could all change, so preperation is an important part of any shoot.

 

What has been your most memorable session and why?

Hmmmm.....

One shoot is memerable for a bad reason ha, i was shooting a look book teathered and i managed to pull the camera off the desk. Of course the camera landed lens first onto a concrete floot smashing my 24-70mm 2.8 to pieces!

 

Another shoot is a more happy memory, i basically ended up dancing like a crazy man with Humberto Tan, that was pretty fun! You can check out the video on my instagram P.a.r.f.i.t.t

Studio, on location or both?

 

I shoot both, and they both present there own challenges, but thats what i love about photography your always learning and adapting.

 

Would you consider yourself a hobbyist or a paid professional?

I am  paid proffessional. But it feels like a hobby :)

 

What has been the biggest source of inspiration in your work?

It has to be knowing that my family are proud of me and stuck behind me through good and bad to get where i am today.

 

Nikon or Canon? Favorite lens?

Canon & Mamiya, my fave lens, can i have two? Canon  85mm 1.2 & also the work horse 24-70mm 2.8

 

What is one piece of advice you would like to offer a new photographer looking to start their own business?

If you have the passion and the talent then never give up! Follow your dream. Best way to learn is to assist other photographers. Thats what i did in london, lots of free work, lots of making coffee for the clients and team but the experience you get is priceless!
