Tell us something about yourself

I’m 34, From Burton on Trent, England. I have 2 kids a 12 year old Daughter and 10 year old Son.

How and when did you get into photography?
I first got into photography in 2009 when I borrowed an Olympus DSLR when I went to visit a friend in the Pyrenees. When I arrived home I brought my 1st DSLR, (A Sony A300) I then  got asked to photograph a friend’s wedding, which is where my paid work comes from, My interest in other areas of photography gradually worked their way into my head from there.

 

What does photography mean to you?

To me Photography is a way of capturing a moment in time, a memory to treasure, with regards to weddings anyway, with my model work, it’s a way of expression, getting to work with and have a laugh with models whilst capturing great images, is a great joy.

 

Please briefly describe your photography style for our readers.

My style is just that, it’s mine….. It has changed and evolved over the last 6years, hopefully for the better, I’m all about natural light at the minute, which works really well with both my wedding work and my model shoots.

 

Where do you get inspiration from?
Inspiration for me can come from anywhere really, social media, research for a shoot, a magazine, walking down the street, anywhere and anything can give me inspiration.

 

Think you in advance what you want in the picture?

Always. I have been on a few workshops run by a great photographer Jack Russell, one of the things I have taken away from these workshops is, start with the end in mind. So I always have an idea of the shots I want before the shoot.

 

Studio, on location or both?

Both, why not? Depends on the shoot and the desired outcome. Studios are obviously a more controlled enviroment, but they can’t give you the look of a wooded location, or a city street etc.

 

Would you consider yourself a hobbyist or a paid professional?

Both. I get paid for the weddings I shoot, so that makes me by definition a professional, but my model shots are a hobby.

 

What has been your most memorable session and why?

Most memorable shoot to date, would have to be the last Jack Russell workshop I did at Coco studio in Nottingham. The main reason for this is that I got to shoot the delightfully beautiful Jenny O’Sullivan, I had been wanting to shoot her for a while, so not only did I get to shoot her, but I also had guidence on how to get the best shots from Jack. Happy days right, plus Jenny was a joy and laugh to work with.

 

What has been the biggest source of inspiration in your work?

Natural light. I’m loving natural light at the minute, and looking at others work of natural light I just really want to get the best I can be at natural light.

 

Nikon or Canon? Favorite lens?

Canon 5D Mkii, favorite lens is a hard one as I really only have 3 lenses, all Canon, 24-105mm F4 Lseries, 70-200mm F4 Lseries and a 50mm F1.8. So it would depend on the shoot, for weddings the 24-105, for portraits/natural light model work the 50mm.

 

What is one piece of advice you would like to offer a new photographer looking to start their own business?

Advice???? Crikey I don’t know as I’m still learning all the time myself! I guess from experience I would say fine a genre/style you love and stick with it, improve all the time and make your shots the best they can be.
