Photographer Michel Verpoorten (Belgium)
Tell us something about yourself
Hello, I'm Belgian photographer based primarily in Brussels. I love life, family, friendship, beautiful things. Like I have a lot of work I try to enjoy of each moment as I can.
How and when did you get into photography?
I’m graphic designer and I started (really) photography 5 years ago. I work a lot in corporate photography but like it’s my passion I developed 2 years ago some shootings with models to really enjoying my passion.
Please briefly describe your photography style for our readers.
I have try differents style when I have started, now I shoot essentially as I call "Natural @ Home". I guess when you look my photographies you understand directly my style.
What does photography mean to you?
The photography is a personnal expression, each people have it's own vision. Put 2 diffrent photographer in the same place with the same subject and you will have 2 differents photos.
So like you can understand photography it's really a personnal approach and vision of life. It's also a sharing moment, first between the photographer and the model (in my case) and after with people who see the final photos.
Where do you get inspiration from?
For my studies in advertising I had to be curious and do plenty of research on what was going on from all sides, so I discover a lot of photographers with all a different stylen theses that have inspired me and I'm always inspired by this background. I stay curious and I stay inspired by some photographers (famous or not) I think it's the best way, looking what you love, not do the same thing but keep these examples that in mind.
Think you in advance what you want in the picture?
Absolutely not. I think just to stay in my spirit and my style, location, light and models are always different, each shooting take always it's own way.
Studio, on location or both?
In location of course it's my style. I make studio but for models like I shoot it's not my stuff.
Would you consider yourself a hobbyist or a paid professional?
I have the two caps, paid professional and hobbyist for my own shoots.
What has been your most memorable session and why?
Very hard question, each session is different, each one is memorable for its own reasons. To not stay without response, I will say with Michelle Wong for his professionalism and his smile during the session, the location and the light was very terrific too and the make-up by Zoé d’Albuquerque was just perfect like I love for natural style.
Nikon or Canon? Favorite lens?
Fuji XT-1 with 35mm 1.4 for models.
(Fuji is an APS-C captor, the 35mm is a 50mm for a full-frame). But I have a Nikon D750 on backup when I shoot models and I use it mostly for my corporate work and studio, the lens still 50mm 1.4
What has been the biggest source of inspiration in your work?
No one, a lot of different photographer are my inspiration.
What is one piece of advice you would like to offer a new photographer looking to start their own business?
Be curious, look the work of a lot of photographers, the good and the bad work, do something different of them, shoot and shoot again, try a lot of thing, make mistakes to not make them again, be egoist and shoot for yourself and not for an audiance, be yourself, have fun and the most important enjoy your's sessions if it's not with fun the result will be bad !
What do you think of our new magazine?
Your magazine is a perfect example for photographers to take inspiration, to discover a lot of photographers and models, you show a lot of different styles each one can found what he love inside.
And I would like to say thank you, I'm proud to be inside now !
